News & Notes

Schedule Changes Ahead for Holiday and End-of-Quarter Workdays

Don’t forget that school and the office will be closed on Monday, January 15th in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Holiday. You can learn more about Martin Luther King Jr here.

The school division is excited to collaborate with Volunteer Fairfax for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Students and families can volunteer on Monday at Volunteer Fairfax’s Give Together event. It is designed to engage families with children (ages 5-12) in service learning.

Projects will include a food drive, assembling caring kits for community members who need support, making no-tie fleece blankets for veterans, environmental stewardship, and support for animal welfare.

Students ages 13 to 18 are welcome to serve as teen event volunteers. This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

Lane Spelling Bee Registration Closed; Practice Sessions Begin Soon

Registration for this year’s Spelling Bee has now closed. Registered students will receive their study packets in next week’s Wednesday Folders.

More Gymnastics Wear Reminders

This is just a reminder that students in all grade levels have started the Gymnastics unit in P.E. It’s important for students to wear clothes that are comfortable and easy to move in, with shirts that can be tucked in. Gymnastics involves rolling, twisting, tumbling, and cartwheeling, among other motions, which can cause clothing to shift. Sneakers are also a must (on all P.E. days). Boots may be good for cold weather, but they are not safe for P.E. activities. If you have questions, please contact your child's P.E. teacher.

Dual Language Immersion Program Registration

Registration for the countywide lottery for Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs will open on Monday, January 22nd. Current pre-K students may apply for the kindergarten immersion program, and current kindergarten students may apply for the first grade immersion programs for the 2024-25 school year. Programs are available in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish.

Parents/caregivers who are interested may want to attend an informational meeting. Meetings are held at the school site. Check the FCPS events calendar for updated information. Meetings will begin on Tuesday, January 16th.

One virtual meeting hosted by the World Languages Office will include general program information. Access to this virtual meeting will be made available on the FCPS events calendar and the Dual Language Immersion registration site on the day of the meeting.

Get more information on the immersion program webpage and registration page.

PTA News

Winter Enrichment COMING SOON!

The moment so many families have been waiting for is finally here: Registration for PTA Winter Enrichment Programs begins Monday, January 22nd!

The PTA would like to thank families for their patience as the program was revamped. The PTA and Lane administrators have organized an entertaining and educational line-up of before- and after-school enrichment programs and Cub Clubs for the winter session. Classes will include gaming, Legos, athletics, and chess. The six-week session will run from February 12th through March 22nd. Flyers will be sent home soon in Wednesday Folders.

Restaurant Nights at
La Fiamma January 23rd and 24th

A new year brings a new restaurant added to the PTA's Restaurant Night lineup - La Fiamma Italian Kitchen! On Tuesday and Wednesday, January 23rd and 24th, a percentage of sales all day will be donated to Lane, dine-in or take-out!

If you haven't visited this restaurant before, the PTA is excited to share that it has a kid's room with tables, chairs, TV, and coloring pages! Let's fill that kid's room with our Lane Lions for a fun after-school play date!

Thank You for Your Holiday Generosity!

During the holiday season, students often share a little holiday cheer with their primary homeroom teacher. This past December, the PTA wanted to spread a little more cheer to the many Lane teachers and staff who also spend an incredible amount of time with our students.

They weren't sure what the response would be, but they are SO GRATEFUL for the outpouring of love that they received! Because of the Lane community’s generosity, the PTA was able to send $40 Amazon gift cards to 76 Lane teachers/staff with a note of appreciation for all they do for our Lane Lions.

Thank you for joining the PTA in spreading the love!
