Safety and Security

The safety of students and staff is our biggest priority. Our protocols include regular safety drills for possible emergencies and strict sign-in/sign-out procedures.

All exterior doors are locked during school hours. All visitors and volunteers must be buzzed in to the office where they must sign in with a photo ID. Adults picking up students in the office must also show a photo ID.

 

Schoology

Schoology is the FCPS divisionwide online learning management system that enhances communication, collaboration, and learning for students, teachers, and families. Teachers create class pages with course content, assignments, study guides, and other student tools.

Parents/guardians can log in to view class information, assignments and scores, and teacher comments and feedback and can message teachers directly through Schoology.

 

SIS ParentVUE

SIS stands for Student Information System. It is the FCPS electronic database that holds all student enrollment information.

A SIS Parent Vue account lets family members view and update enrollment information, health information, and emergency care information.

Through Parent Vue, parents can also see student grades and message teachers.

 

Special Education

Some students with medical conditions or disabilities may need extra support to reach their academic, social/emotional, and physical goals. This support is known as special-education services.

The type of support depends on the student’s individual needs and abilities.

Special-education students participate in all school activities to the best of their abilities.

Families with concerns may request an evaluation for services and do not need to wait for a staff member to do so. Once a request is made, the school has 10 days to respond and start the process.

 

Specials

As mentioned in previous sections, in addition to the core curriculum, all students participate in additional learning in areas such as the fine arts, physical education, and literacy. We refer to these as “specials.”

Weekly specials include:

• Art
• Music
• Physical Education (P.E.)
• Library

 

SR&R (Student Rights and Responsibilities)

The Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) document explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to behaviors to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable and supportive school environment.

School disciplinary procedures are dictated by the SR&R.

All parents must certify that they have read and understand the SR&R each year.

Technology

Teachers use a variety of technology to support learning in the classroom, including laptops and iPads.

All students in all grade levels will be assigned a computer for their use during the school year (kindergarten will get an iPad; other grades will get a laptop.

In most cases, younger students leave their laptops at school, but older students make take theirs back and forth to work on assignments at home.

Cell Phones

Students are allowed to bring cell phones to school, HOWEVER their use during the school day is strictly prohibited UNLESS directed by a teacher. Phones may be used to read, research, scan QR codes, etc., as part of classwork as directed.

Otherwise, cell phones must remain off in backpacks.

If a student uses a cell phone inappropriately, the phone will be confiscated and a parent/guardian must pick it up from the office.

User IDs and Passwords

All school devices and student accounts are password protected.

Younger students are assigned a specific password, with which parents are provided. Older students may create their own passwords, which administrators may override at any time.

Parent accounts for SIS and Schoology use the same username and password, which are created during set-up.
