News & Notes
PTA Read-a-thon Is Up and Running Full Speed Ahead!

Thanks to everyone who came to the PTA’s Read-a-thon Kick-Off Celebration last Thursday and to all of the students and staff members who showcased their favorite books by dressing up! There were definitely lots of unusual characters running around the school!

The PTA would like to thank all of the terrific sponsors who helped make Thursday evening a success, including Rita’s, La Fondita, DC Slices, Three Wishes Bookshop, SignGypsies, and – of course – Big Country Amusements. And a huge thanks as well to all of the awesome volunteers who contributed to the planning as well as the night of the event.

The Read-a-thon is the PTA’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Donations fund field trips, classroom enhancements, family events, literacy programs, teacher appreciation, the Steam Lab, enrichment, and more!

Participation and giving is easy. Just follow these steps to register:

  • STEP 1: Go to https://lanepta.givebacks.gives/readathon2024registration
  • STEP 2: Scroll to "Student Registrations." Adjust the “#” to reflect the number of children in your home who are participating. Add to Cart.
  • STEP 3: Click "Check out now." Fill in info for ALL registrants including grade level (despite this being noted as optional.)
  • STEP 4: Verify and submit.

That’s it! Then your kids are ready to read and log minutes and pledges!

TWO spirit days are planned this week to help showcase the Read-a-thon.

  • TOMORROW – Tuesday, September 17th – will be Tie-Dye Day. Students are encouraged to wear their most vibrant, tie-dyed creations and show off their unique style. It's the perfect way to brighten up our school spirit and celebrate our Read-a-Thon in a burst of color.
  • Thursday, September 19th will be Pajama Day! Lane Lions can get cozy and comfortable to make reading more fun. Students are welcome to wear their favorite pajamas to school (school-appropriate styles, please, and no slippers).

Keep an eye on the PTA’s Facebook page for all the latest Read-a-thon updates!

Parent/Caregiver Checklist: Have You Completed These Important Forms and Follow-Ups?

We understand that the multiple school forms caregivers receive during the first weeks of school can feel overwhelming, but each one helps set your child up for a successful school year!

ParentVUE

If you do not yet have a SIS ParentVUE account, please contact Lane family liaison Melanie Crosby Hardy at [email protected] for an activation code and follow the directions on the SIS ParentVUE Account webpage.

Immunization Requirements

Please check with your healthcare provider as soon as possible to make sure your child is up to date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia. Starting Monday, September 30th, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school.

You may check your child’s immunization compliance and submit their immunization record in SIS ParentVUE. Records may also be delivered to your school’s front office.

Alternative immunization documents (below) may also be provided to your school’s front office, but they may not be uploaded in ParentVUE:

  • a healthcare provider’s written statement specifying all administered immunizations;
  • a healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption;
  • a notarized Religious Exemption form objecting to the administration of immunizations due to conflicts with religious tenets or practices.

Find more information on immunizations.

Permission Forms

Families can easily grant permission for their children to access a variety of school resources through the Parent Digital Consent system. Parents can opt their child in or out of resources including online educational tools, school counseling services, and tutoring services. They can also change how student information is managed. Visit the Parent Digital Consent webpage to access the system. Watch this video to see how to use the tool.

Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R)

The SR&R document explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses. Parents using SIS ParentVUE will be prompted to sign the document when logging in to that platform. A printable version of the document with a signature sheet is available on the SR&R webpage. This form should be signed and returned by Friday, September 30th.

Questions?

If you have questions about any of these forms or protocols, please contact Mrs. Crosby Hardy at the address above.

“Family Friday Breakfast Bites” Continue This Friday with 2nd Grade Families!

Thanks to all of the 1st grade families that attended last Friday’s second “Family Friday Breakfast Bites.” Once again, it was a fun and flavorful way to start the day and end the week. More than 20 families joined us, and – once again – there was so much delicious food!

This Friday, September 20th, we invite all 2nd grade families to join us from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. in the cafeteria. We ask that each family bring a breakfast dish or item to share (muffins, donuts, casseroles, etc.). If you are a 2nd grade family that would like to attend, please RSVP here, and let us know what you’ll be bringing.

Fall Picture Days Start September 20th! Volunteers Needed!

Advanced Academic Program (AAP) Parent Meeting on Thursday, September 26th, 6 p.m.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is committed to challenging all students through talent development efforts and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of advanced learners.

FCPS offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in Grades K-12. The continuum of services approach recognizes unique student needs and focuses on matching services, not labeling students. Teachers and staff work together to provide Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services. Through this continuum, students have:

  • Multiple entry points for deeper learning opportunities in specific areas of need as they develop.
  • A cluster group of students with similar academic needs to continue growing in their learning.

You can learn more about AAP at Lane and in FCPS at a parent information session on Thursday, September 26th at 6 p.m. in the Lane cafeteria. At this meeting, Linda Simon, Lane’s Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, will provide information about the continuum of AAP services in Fairfax County as well as a brief overview of the AAP screening process. This meeting is open to all interested parents with students in kindergarten through 6th grade.

You can also get additional information about the AAP program in the Fall 2024-2025 Advanced Academics Newsletter.

Hispanic Heritage Month: Share Your Culture with Your Lane Family!

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month by celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The celebration started yesterday and runs through October 15th.

We are planning to observe this special month more than ever this year. Did you know that almost 10% of our students at Lane speak Spanish at home? And we bet there are even more who come from a Hispanic heritage. We want to celebrate all of them!

Watch for more visible appreciation around the school in the coming weeks (including a colorful new bulletin board and a big map where students can let us know where they are from). We are also planning a quarterly cultural celebration for later this fall, which will spotlight Hispanic Heritage Month along with other cultural observances and celebrations. Watch for more information on that event coming soon.

Most of all, we want to showcase and honor our students of Hispanic heritage. We encourage all families of Hispanic heritage to send in pictures of their Lane students so we can post them alongside our new bulletin board. You can email the photos to our family liaison, Melanie Crosby Hardy, at [email protected], or send it to her through TalkingPoints. Please send photos in by Friday, September 27th.

Save the Date for Blue Star Welcome Week “Muffins for Military Lions” – Monday, September 23rd!

Blue Star Welcome Week is a nationwide initiative to ensure military families feel a sense of belonging to their school communities. We are honored to have many military-connected lions in our school community and look forward to celebrating them during this special week. On Monday, September 23rd, we will host a Blue Star Welcome Week “Muffins for Military Lions” reception from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m.

In the past, this reception has been for military families only, but we recognize that all Lane Lions are connected to these students as classmates, friends, neighbors, and more! So this year, all Lane Lions – military and non-military – and their families are welcome!

We ask that each family bring a dozen mini muffins or half a dozen full-size muffins to share with others. Muffins can be store-bought or homemade. We just ask that if you make your own you provide an ingredients list so that our families with allergies can choose safely. If you’d like join us that morning, please fill out this RSVP form and tell us what you’ll bring.

We look forward to celebrating our military families together on the 23rd!

News & Notes First Early Release Monday Is September 16th! Please Fill Out the Child Care Form Now!

The Early Release Mondays planned throughout the school year for elementary schools are essential to allow educators time for planning and professional development. Students will be dismissed three hours early seven times throughout the school year and are encouraged to return home via their normal route. However, we understand there may be a childcare hardship because of the Early Release Mondays for many of our families. To resolve these concerns, student supervision will be available for families who need it.

Lane’s first Early Release Monday is September 16th. Students will be dismissed at 1:05 p.m.

To help plan for our school’s childcare needs during the Early Release Mondays, please complete this form: https://forms.gle/xkaXoVgozWPkv6NX9 for each of your children who are enrolled at Lane Elementary. All families must submit form(s), even if they do not need child care.

The form covers the first two Early Release Mondays, scheduled for September 16, 2024, and October 21, 2024. If you have multiple children, you will need to submit multiple forms. Staff will confirm the after-school supervision plan for each student.

Thank you to all the families who have already filled out this form. If you’ve already completed it, you can disregard this reminder.

Lane PTA Read-a-thon Starts This Week – Storybook Character Day and Evening Celebration on Thursday, September 12th!

The Lane PTA’s 2nd Annual Read-a-thon kicks off this week with two big events on Tuesday, September 12th – a reading-centered spirit day and a community celebration featuring food, fun, bounce houses and – of course – reading! Read on for the details.

Dress Like Your Favorite Storybook Character Day!

To celebrate the first day of our Read-a-thon, all students are encouraged to dress like their favorite storybook character and bring in the matching book to show their class. As an added benefit, they can read it and start collecting Read-a-thon minutes!

As a reminder, Lane is an elementary school with kids ranging from age 5 to 12. It is important to be courteous, respectful, and appropriate with storybook character choices. Costume masks are not allowed. Violent characters are not appropriate, nor allowed. Our Lane Lions know how to make good choices. Please help us ensure those good choices are made.

  Read-a-thon Kick-Off Event, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

You don't want to miss this event! The PTA has partnered with:

  • Big Country Amusements, and they are bringing inflatable bounce houses, slides, and more;
  • Rita's, which will have Italian Ice for ALL Lane attendees;
  • SignGypsies to create a photo spot to share with family and friends that our Read-a-thon has begun;
  • Three Wishes Mobile Bookshop to have a selection of fun, new books available for purchase for our Read-a-thon readers;
  • Local celebrity readers for onsite read-alouds;
  • and food trucks with tasty food available for purchase.

Volunteers are needed to help make this big event a success. Please sign up here if you’d like to help.

How the Read-a-thon Will Work

Here's how the Read-a-thon will work: Kids pledge to read a certain amount of minutes. The more minutes read, the more likely the reader is to win super fun prizes! Once they’ve set their minutes, students can reach out to family and friends to ask for donations as they work toward their goal. It's a fantastic way to promote reading and raise funds for our school!

Check your child’s Wednesday Folder this week for the full Read-a-thon packet, and keep an eye on PTA’s Facebook page for all the latest Read-a-thon updates!

“Family Friday Breakfast Bites” Events Continue This Friday with 1st Grade Families!

Thanks to all of the kindergarten families that joined us last Friday for a fun and flavorful first “Family Friday Breakfast Bites”! We had more than 25 families turn out as well as several staff members. And there was so much delicious food! It was a wonderful way to start building community with our newest families.

This Friday, September 13th, we invite all 1st grade families to join us from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. in the cafeteria. We just ask that each family bring a breakfast dish or item to share (muffins, donuts, casseroles, etc.). If you are a 1st grade family that would like to attend, please RSVP here and let us know what you’ll be bringing.

Next week, we look forward to welcoming 2nd grade families (you can RSVP now here), and then will take a break until mid-October, when we’ll finish up with a gathering for 3rd and 4th grade families and one for 5th and 6th grade families.

We hope to see your family at one of these events!

Patriot Day and September 11th National Day of Service

With the upcoming 23rd anniversary of September 11, FCPS acknowledges the loss of life, the heroism of our first responders, and the resilience of our country. The September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, also called Patriot Day, is a chance to reflect and act in service to others to honor those who were injured or killed in the terrorist attacks.

All FCPS students are encouraged to participate in service learning as it supports Portrait of a Graduate (POG) attributes and social and emotional learning (SEL) skills.

Kindergarten Color Weeks Continue through Friday

Thanks to all of our students and staff members who’ve been sharing the colorful fun with our kindergarten classes as each day celebrates a different stripe of the rainbow and other hues. We hope the participation will continue!

Today was Yellow Day, and it was a bright one! Here’s the schedule for the remainder of the week:

  • Tuesday 9/10: Black and White
  • Wednesday 9/11: Red, White and Blue (for Patriot Day)
  • Thursday 9/12: PTA Read-a-thon Storybook Character Day
  • Friday 9/13: Rainbow.

Note to Kindergarten Parents: Because Kindergarten is also working on listening skills, students will be told what color to wear before the following day. Our hope is that students will listen and tell you the color at home. Please continue to keep the secret!

The celebration starts today and runs through October 15th.

Please send photos in by Friday, September 20th.

News & Notes “Family Friday Breakfast Bites” Grade-Level Gatherings Begin September 6th with Event for Kindergarten Families

Over the summer, we reviewed the results of the 2024 Family Engagement Survey and discovered that our parents are craving more chances to connect with each other and the school in comfortable, informal settings. This year we hope to answer that call in a variety of ways. The first will be a series of casual grade-level gatherings called “Family Friday Breakfast Bites.”

These potluck sharing events will be held on Friday mornings before school from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. throughout the fall. Families can attend together to enjoy a light breakfast and family fellowship with other Lane lions in the same or similar grade levels before students go off to class. Parents and other family members who attend may stay a bit longer to continue conversations and ask questions of family liaisons and other staff members who may be present.

The first "Family Friday" will be held THIS FRIDAY, September 6th. All kindergarten families are invited to attend. We just ask that each family bring a breakfast dish or item to share (muffins, donuts, casseroles, etc.). If you are a kindergarten family that would like to attend, please RSVP here and let us know what you’ll be bringing.

We look forward to seeing our kindergarten families on September 6th! Here are the dates for the other grade levels:

  • Friday, September 13th – 1st Grade Families (RSVP here)
  • Friday, September 20th – 2nd Grade Families (RSVP here)
  • Friday, October 18th – 3rd & 4th Grade Families
  • Friday, October 25th – 5th & 6th Grade Families

Sign-ups for these events will be posted in the coming weeks!

Introducing TalkingPoints Topics – Customize Your School Communication!

We know three things about communication at Lane:

  1. Our families want to be informed and up-to-date.
  2. TalkingPoints – the texting platform and mobile app – is a popular and convenient way to relay that information.
  3. We already send out a lot of information, but we receive even more, which may be of value to our families.

What we don’t know is which extra information which families would like to receive. So this year we are introducing TalkingPoints Topics, so you can choose the type of additional announcements and reminders you would like to receive through text messages or the TalkingPoints App.

Please note that all families will automatically receive basic TalkingPoints schoolwide messages from our family liaison, Melanie Crosby Hardy, and classroom-specific information from their children’s teachers.

If you’d like to receive additional information, such as Week-at-a-Glance school calendar reminders, PTA announcements, and parenting resources, please complete this form or fill out the paper form you will receive in this week’s Wednesday Folder.

Kindergarten Color Weeks – Help Our Littlest Lions Learn Their Colors!

Our kindergarten classrooms are about to get really colorful, as our youngest students celebrate and learn about a different color every day. Staff and students in other grades are encouraged to showcase the rainbow along with them these two weeks by also wearing the designated color of the day. Here’s the schedule:

  • Tuesday 9/3: Favorite Color
  • Wednesday 9/4: Orange
  • Thursday 9/5: Green
  • Friday 9/6: Purple/Pink
  • Monday, 9/9: Yellow
  • Tuesday 9/10: Black and White
  • Wednesday 9/11: Red, White and Blue (for Patriot Day)
  • Thursday 9/12: PTA Read-a-thon Storybook Character Day
  • Friday 9/13: Rainbow.

Please encourage your child – no matter what grade level – to join the colorful fun!

NOTE TO KINDERGARTEN PARENTS: Because Kindergarten is also working on listening skills, students will be told what color to wear the following day. Our hope is that students will listen and tell you the color at home. Please don’t share the secret!

First Early Release Monday Is September 16th! Please Fill Out the Child Care Form Now

The Early Release Mondays planned throughout the school year for elementary schools are essential to allow educators time for planning and professional development.  Students will be dismissed 3 hours early seven times throughout the school year and are encouraged to return home via their normal route.

  2024 Student Rights and Responsibilities

FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities document (SR&R) explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. Read Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid’s letter to families regarding the SR&R.

Parents/caregivers should talk to their child(ren) about expectations for this school year. Also, please log in to SIS ParentVUE and sign to acknowledge your review of the SR&R, or sign and return the signature sheet to your child’s school by Monday, September 30th.

You can submit questions online regarding the SR&R.

  REMINDER: Update Immunizations and Records

Please check with your healthcare provider as soon as possible to make sure your child is up-to-date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia. Starting Monday, September 30th, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school.

You can check your child’s immunization compliance and submit their immunization record in SIS ParentVUE. Records may also be delivered to a school’s front office.

If your child needs a vaccine, please make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or access other local services. If needed, families may also provide other immunization documentation including a healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption or a notarized Religious Exemption Form.

Find more information on immunizations on the FCPS website.

Would You Like to Volunteer at Lane? Please Review Our Volunteer Orientation Online

The spirit of service and volunteerism is strong at Lane! We always appreciate any support you can provide and offer a variety of ways that you can help.

We ask that all family members who’d like to volunteer at school complete an orientation that covers responsibilities and expectations. We understand that it can be difficult for families to attend information sessions, both during the school day and in the evenings, so this year we have put the information online. Please review these slides at your convenience before scheduling your first day of volunteering.

Once you have reviewed the slides, please fill out our Lane Volunteer Form. Once that is complete you can reach out to your child’s teacher or others on staff to inquire about volunteer opportunities.

Thank you for your cooperation and generous support!

2023-30 Strategic Plan: Foundation of Four Pillars

While the five goals of FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan focus on student success, the four pillars describe what FCPS must do well to reach our goals for all students:

  • The first focus of the pillars is on teaching and learning. We want to make sure each and every student has access to excellent and inclusive learning environments and that instruction meets students’ individual needs.
  • The second pillar focuses on our connection with families and our communities. We cannot do this work alone. Strong partnerships are key to our students’ success.
  • The third pillar is centered on our hiring and maintaining a world-class, diverse workforce. We want to make sure our incredible employees have what they need to help our students thrive.
  • The fourth and final pillar centers on how we bring this all together. We remain focused on creating a culture of equity, excellence, and accountability where data guides our decisions.
