News & Notes

Back-to-School Night on Thursday, August 22nd, 6 – 8 p.m.; Optional Sessions Begin at 5:30 p.m.

Please make plans to join us for Back-to-School Night on Thursday, August 22nd from 6 to 8 p.m. This event is very important for parents and guardians, as it offers a chance to meet teachers and hear directly from them about plans for the year ahead and classroom policies.

We will offer two sessions during the evening so those with multiple children at Lane will be able to visit more classrooms. In addition, we will offer the following optional presentations you may wish to attend:

  • Information on social/emotional learning and support, presented by our counselors, school psychologist, and social worker,
  • Math and literacy information, presented by our math and literacy resource teachers,
  • An orientation for new families, presented by our family liaisons.

Each session will be presented three times – at 5:30, 6:15, and 7 – so you can attend all three if you are interested.

Here is the full schedule for the event:

5:30 – 6 p.m.: Family Information Sessions

  • Clinical Team (counselors, social worker, school psychologist) – Library
  • Literacy and Reading Specialist – Cafeteria
  • New Family Orientation with Family Liaisons – Cafeteria

6 - 6:45 p.m.: Classroom Session 1 in individual classrooms

6:15 – 6:45 p.m.: Family Information Sessions

  • Clinical Team (counselors, social worker, school psychologist) – Library
  • Literacy and Reading Specialist – Cafeteria
  • New Family Orientation with Family Liaisons – Cafeteria

7 – 7:45 p.m.: Classroom Session 2 in individual classrooms

7 – 7:30 p.m.: Family Information Sessions

  • Clinical Team (counselors, social worker, school psychologist) – Library
  • Literacy and Reading Specialist – Cafeteria
  • New Family Orientation with Family Liaisons – Cafeteria.

Please note that Back-to-School Night is designed for adults only and that childcare will not be available. If you bring your children with you, they will need to remain with you throughout the evening.

REMINDER: Update Immunizations and Records

Please check with your healthcare provider as soon as possible to make sure your child is up-to-date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia. Starting Monday, September 30th, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school.

You can check your child’s immunization compliance and submit their immunization record in SIS ParentVUE. Records may also be delivered to a school’s front office.

If your child needs a vaccine, please make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or access other local services. If needed, families may also provide other immunization documentation including a healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption or a notarized Religious Exemption Form.

Find more information on immunizations on the FCPS website.

After-School Form for Early Release Mondays

The Early Release Mondays planned throughout the school year for elementary schools are essential to allow educators time for planning and professional development. Students will be dismissed 3 hours early seven times throughout the school year and are encouraged to return home via their normal route. However, we understand there may be a childcare hardship because of the Early Release Mondays for many of our families. To resolve these concerns, student supervision will be available for families who need it.

The following dates are planned for Early Release Mondays throughout the school year:

  • September 16th
  • October 21st
  • November 18th
  • February 10th
  • March 10th
  • April 21st
  • May 12th.

To help plan for our school’s childcare needs during the Early Release Mondays, please complete this form: https://forms.gle/xkaXoVgozWPkv6NX9 for each of your children who are enrolled at Lane Elementary. The form covers the first two Early Release Mondays, scheduled for September 16, 2024, and October 21, 2024. If you have multiple children, you will need to submit multiple forms. Staff will confirm the after-school supervision plan for each student.

Get Ready to Move in P. E. This Year!

Mr. P and Ms. K are excited to start off the new year in P.E.! There’s lots of running and rolling and other fun moves ahead, so be sure your child is dressed appropriately on P.E. days. That means wearing sneakers and clothing that’s safe and comfortable to move in. Thanks for helping us set your child up for success!

STEAM Team Heats Up for the New School Year! You Can Help!

Our STEAM team – Mrs. Christopher and Mrs. Sperry – are excited to kick off an exciting year in STEAM, and they need your help to make the many different engineering activities they’re planning happen.

These activities may require an assortment of unusual supplies. If you would like to help, please send in glue sticks, paper towel/toilet paper rolls, pipe cleaners, or anything that may seem STEAM-related (old Legos, Magnatiles, gears, etc.).

If you have any questions about STEAM throughout the year, please reach out to them at any time:

Abbie Christopher – [email protected]
Alexis Sperry – [email protected].

They’re looking forward to a fun school year!

From the Art Department: Dressing for Art and the Garden

The art team, Mrs. Carlson and Ms. Xena, is excited to welcome Lane students back to school this week. To encourage creativity and exploration, our art curriculum includes hands-on projects that may get messy. To protect your child’s clothing, please send them to school on art days in attire suitable for artistic endeavors that can withstand paint, glue, and other art materials.

They are also excited to spend time learning in and caring for our outdoor classroom and gardens this year! Please send your child to school in shoes that are suitable for outdoor activities and can get dirty.

Most of all, they are looking forward to watching your child grow and learn through these experiences.

It’s Not Too Late to Sign Up for Music Electives!

Is Your Child Interested in Learning to Play an Instrument?

Attention 4th, 5th, and 6th Grade Families! NOW is the time to sign up to learn how to play an instrument in Strings (grades 4, 5, 6) or Band (grades 5, 6 only)! Lessons happen during the school day (during Specials) with a concert at the end of the year! The deadline to sign up is Wednesday, August 28th! Don’t miss out on the opportunity to be part of these AMAZING instrumental programs at Lane!

An Instrument Petting Zoo (Band and Strings) will be held on Thursday, August 22nd at Hayfield High School from 4 to 6 p.m.! Students are invited to come try out the different instruments and pick the best one for them! Local vendors will also be on site to rent instruments to you and to fit instruments to individual students!

There will be a Strings Parent Information Night on Wednesday, August 28th at 7:30 p.m. at Hayfield Secondary School. All families who are new to Strings are encouraged to attend to get information about the expectations for learning!

Does Your Child Like to Sing?

Students in 5th and 6th grade also have the opportunity to join Chorus this year! Chorus lessons happen during the school day, and two concert performances are performed during the school year. Students may choose an instrument AND Chorus. Sign up for Chorus now!

If you have questions, please reach out to the music teachers:

James Piccirello, Strings, [email protected]
Ryan Woessner, Band, [email protected]
Grayson Crouch, Chorus, [email protected]
Stefan Griffin, Chorus, [email protected]

From the Shelves of the Lane Library: Volunteers Needed!

Our librarian, Mrs. Chozick, is in need of volunteer help in the library. Most of the work will be shelving books (training will be provided); occasionally other help will be needed, like making copies or taking down displays, but expect to be shelving books most of the time.

If you can spare just one hour once a week, that would be splendid! As it is most helpful to have volunteers throughout the day and week, so that books can be continuously shelved, volunteer times are on a first-come, first-served basis.

Please contact Mrs. Chozick at [email protected] to let her know what times you might be available or if you should have any questions. Thanks so much for considering helping in the library!

The Lion’s Roar Welcome to the New School Year and First Day Reminders — Friday, August 16, 2024

Thanks for Coming to Open House!

It was wonderful to see so many happy, smiling faces at our Open House last night! We could feel the excitement as students met their new teachers, checked out their new classrooms, caught up with old friends, and met some new ones. Music teachers Mr. Griffin and Mr. Crouch along with Band teacher Mr. Woessner and our new Strings teacher Mr. Piccirello jammed together on the piano, drums, bass, and trumpet throughout the event, providing a lively, upbeat soundtrack.

First Day of School Is Monday, August 19th!

The countdown is on! Just three more days until the first day of school! We are so excited to welcome all our students back next week. To make that day as smooth as possible, please read these important tips and reminders.

Student Arrival/Dismissal

Students arrive at and leave school in three main ways: riding a school bus, walking, or riding in cars (“Kiss and Ride”). It’s important that we know how students travel home each day so that we know where to send them at dismissal time. Each student will be given a backpack tag that identifies their method of transportation.

If you did not fill out the transportation form during Open House, please download it here and send it in with your child on the first day. We will provide your child with the appropriate tag.

Please Note:

On the first day, parents are welcome to bring their children into the building, or meet them in the building if they ride the bus, and walk them to their classroom hallway. Once the bell rings at 9:20, all adults are invited to attend the PTA’s First Day Coffee in the Cafeteria.

Reminders
  • Arrival:

    • Students may not be dropped off before 9:05 a.m., when our doors open. There is NO supervision prior to that time.
    • Starting at 9:05 a.m., students enter the building and walk to their classrooms.
    • Students arriving after 9:20 a.m. are considered tardy and will need to be walked in by their parent/guardian to be signed in in the office (Door #1).

  • Student entry/exit doors:

    • Buses arrive on the south side of the building, and bus riders enter and exit through Door #10.
    • Kiss and Ride students enter and exit through Door #2 on the north side of the building.
    • Walkers enter through Door #2 with car riders but exit through Door #5 (near the gym) at the end of the day.

  • Kiss and Ride:

    • There is a specific traffic pattern during arrival (9:05 – 9:20 a.m.) and dismissal (4 – 4:20 p.m.). The main entrance on Beulah Street is CLOSED at these times. (See map below.)
    • Have your child unload and load on the curbside. Stay in your car for your safety. All Kiss and Ride parents are expected to be in the Kiss and Ride line.
    • Be respectful of the pacing of the line. Do not try to pass other cars in the line.
    • Do not park on Kingstowne Commons Drive or in neighborhoods adjacent to the school grounds to wait for your child. Use only the official Kiss and Ride lane. Do not drop off or pick up your child anywhere else.
    • Do not use your cell phone while in the Kiss and Ride area during arrival or dismissal.

  PTA First Day Coffee on Monday, August 19th, 9:20 – 10:30 a.m.

After the first day of school begins at 9:20, the PTA will host a First Day Coffee in the cafeteria for all parents and family members who would like to attend. It’s a great way to meet other parents and learn about many of the programs happening at the school and opportunities to get involved.

Spirit wear will be available at the event, so if you weren’t able to purchase your new Lane wardrobe items last night, be sure to check it out on Monday morning. If you couldn’t find exactly what you were looking for, visit the PTA’s online store for even more options. You can have your order shipped to your home now, or you can wait until the end of the month and get free shipping to the school. Details are on the website.

  Join the PTA!

The PTA was busy at Open House, selling spiritwear, handing out information about the upcoming Read-a-thon, and signing families up for membership – and that was after setting up and serving the entire Lane staff a delicious dinner from Delia’s, one of our dedicated community restaurant partners.

Please consider joining this amazing organization, run completely by parent volunteers. Being a PTA member has numerous benefits – it's a great way to meet new friends and become more involved in your child's school and community. Join on their website!

  Transportation Patience and Safety

Thank you for your patience as we all get used to new routines this school year. We appreciate our families being patient as they wait for their children’s buses.

If a student’s bus is delayed, parents may access the Bus Delay Notification System or use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to receive the delayed bus report. Email messages will be sent to announce significant bus delays. Contact the Transportation Office at 703-446-2150 with any additional questions. For any concerns after hours (after 5:30 p.m.), contact Safety and Security at 571-423-2000.

To make sure you receive email messages about bus delays, update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE.

Required Back-to-School Forms

Our First Day Packets are all virtual again this year. You can find the required forms (except for the Emergency Care Form) and other information on the Virtual First Day Packet page on our school website.

These forms must be reviewed, updated (if needed), and signed through your ParentVUE account or using a paper form (if available):

If you’re using a paper form, please return it to school or scan it and email it to our registrar Jami O’Hagan at [email protected].

  Emergency Care Form

Thank you to all the parents and guardians who signed off on their child’s Emergency Care Form for the new school year at Open House last night. If you were not able to attend this event, you will receive a copy of this very important form on the first day of school. Please be sure to update it and return it as soon as possible. Be sure to sign it!

Additional Optional Forms

Homeless Student Referral Form

FCPS Privacy and Opt-Out Forms (See article below for more information.)

Thank you for your prompt action and your support!

Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights

Fairfax County Public Schools wants all parents and caregivers to understand its policies regarding surveys, records, curriculum, privacy, and related rights.

In its Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights and Opt-Out Forms (Annual Notice), FCPS provides explanations of the rights listed above as well as forms that may be used to exercise opt-out choices. Two versions of the Annual Notice are available: a grades K-8 version and a grades 9-12 version. Parents/caregivers with children at different grade levels should read each applicable version of the Annual Notice, because the notices and opt-out rights vary depending on the student’s grade level.

Get more information and view the 2024-25 Opt-Out Booklets.

News & Notes

Back-to-School Town Halls This Week!

Virtual Town Hall in English via Zoom – Tuesday, August 13th, 6:30 p.m.

Join us online to hear the latest news about the upcoming school year from Lane Principal Christine Prahl. We will have time for questions as well.

Join the Zoom session here.

In-Person Town Hall in Spanish in the Lane Library – Wednesday, August 14th, 6:30 p.m.

Mrs. Prahl and our new family liaison Andrea Howard will present this special back-to-school presentation for our Spanish-speaking families in person.

Open House Thursday, August 15th, 5 – 7 p.m.

Students and their families are invited to come to school during this time period to see their classrooms, meet their teachers, and reconnect with Lane friends.

Teachers will contact families of students in their classrooms by Wednesday, August 14th. Teacher assignments will also be posted in ParentVUE and will be available at Open House. Please do not contact the school office for this information.

In order to manage our capacity for this popular event, we have divided our school community into three groups, by student last name. (If you have children with different last names, your family may choose a session based on any of the names.)

  • Last names that begin with A through H: 5 – 5:30 p.m.
  • Last names that begin with I through Q: 5:45 – 6:15 p.m.
  • Last names that begin with R through Z: 6:30 – 7 p.m.

We will host a special Open House earlier in the day from 3:30 to 4 p.m. to accommodate some of our special-education students who require this less-crowded environment. Case managers will reach out to those families to invite them. If you feel your child needs to attend this session and don’t hear anything, please contact your case manager or an administrator.

Please feel free to bring your child's school supplies to this event so you won't have to worry about carrying them on the first day of school.

If your child requires medication during the school day, you will also be able to drop that off in our School Health Room.

Parking will be limited, so please walk to school or carpool if possible.

Back-to-School Checklist

The first day of school – Monday, August 19th – is just one week away! Before that big day, make sure you have completed the following items on our Back-to-School Checklist.

  • Sign Up for SIS ParentVUE
Access your student’s attendance records, grades, and assignments at any time with SIS ParentVUE. Once you have activated a SIS ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. Information about students in the same family can be accessed through the same SIS ParentVUE account. You can also access SIS ParentVUE using an app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android devices.

Returning parents/caregivers who have already created and activated accounts can continue to use existing usernames and passwords to log in. New parents/caregivers, or those who have not yet set up an account, will need an activation code. If you did not receive such a code when you registered or need a new one, please contact our family liaison, Melanie Crosby Hardy, at [email protected].

A new attendance-reporting feature in ParentVUE will launch on the first day of school, August 19th. Parents and caregivers will have the option to submit their student’s attendance directly through ParentVUE, which will streamline the attendance-reporting process and enhance communication between parents and schools. This change will make it more convenient for parents and schools to manage students' attendance while ensuring the highest level of security. ParentVUE will replace the current Attendance Form on our website. The old form will be discontinued on the site.

Need help creating an account? This video walks through the steps. Find out more about SIS ParentVUE.

  • Update Your Contact Information
To be sure you receive important information from your schools, update your phone numbers and/or email addresses in the Parent/Guardian section of SIS ParentVUE.

  • Update Immunizations and Records
Immunizations are required for all students to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of protecting them from certain diseases and keeping them healthy. Please log in to SIS ParentVUE to see what immunizations your child has recorded.

Please check with your healthcare provider to make sure your child is up-to-date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia as soon as possible. If your child needs a vaccine, please make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or access other local services.

Remember to request your child’s immunization record and bring that to the school’s front office or submit the record via SIS ParentVUE as soon as possible. Find more information on FCPS’ website.

Starting Monday, September 30th students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school.

  • Purchase Your School Supplies
If you haven’t yet bought your child’s school supplies, now is the time to do so. Lists for each grade are posted on our school website at https://lanees.fcps.edu/academics/school-supply-lists.

You can bring your child’s supplies when you attend Open House on Thursday, August 15th or on the first day of school.

If you need financial assistance with school supplies, please contact our family liaison, Melanie Crosby Hardy, at [email protected].

  • Prepare for Meals at School
Parents/caregivers need to provide their students with money to purchase meals at school, send them with a packed lunch, or apply (and be approved) for free and reduced-price meals benefits. School breakfast for students costs $1.75. Lunch is $3.25 for elementary students and $3.50 for middle, secondary, and high school students.

The best way to purchase meals and additional food items is to use MySchoolBucks. If you have not already, set up your student’s MySchoolBucks account today.

MySchoolBucks accounts can be set up to add money to the account automatically as needed, and families with multiple children can use the same MySchoolBucks account.

  • Apply for Free and Reduced-Priced Meals
The application for free and reduced-priced meals is now available for the 2024-25 school year. Students who were approved for free and reduced-price lunch last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should re-apply as soon as possible, so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost.

  • Save the Date: Back-to-School Night
Our Back-to-School Night will be held on Thursday, August 22nd from 6 to 8 p.m., with special sessions for all parents starting at 5:30 p.m. See the article below for details.

  • Bookmark the School Year Calendar
Be sure to bookmark the FCPS school year calendar to keep track of school holidays, breaks, and observances:

    • Days marked with a blue “H” are student holidays. Schools are closed on these days.
    • Days marked with an orange “O” are religious and cultural observance days (or evenings if only half marked). There is school on these days, but certain events that cannot be made up may not be scheduled on these days.
    • Days marked in pink are holidays for students, but working days for teachers and staff.

Some holidays and observances, such as Eid al-Fitr, may shift and the calendar may be adjusted.

  • May 12th.

To help us plan for our school’s childcare needs during the Early Release Mondays, please complete this form: https://forms.gle/xkaXoVgozWPkv6NX9 for each of your children who are enrolled at Lane Elementary. The form covers the first two Early Release Mondays, scheduled for September 16, 2024, and October 21, 2024. If you have multiple children, you will need to submit multiple forms.   Our Voices, Our Future:
Multilingual Learners Summit

All multilingual learners and their families are invited to attend a summit on Thursday, August 8, 2024, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at Annandale High School.

The summit will be primarily geared for secondary multilingual learners, but all are welcome to attend. The goal of the summit is to foster an environment of empowerment where multilingual students and their families can establish meaningful connections, engage in active listening, and openly share their experiences, cultivating mutual support and a deeper understanding of educational pathways within FCPS.

This event will begin with a table fair showcasing many opportunities available within FCPS and the wider community that support paths to graduation and future careers for students. Additionally, a keynote will be presented by Dr. Jose Luis Zelaya who will share a message about the power of community and resilience. A student panel will dialogue with Dr. Zelaya following the keynote.

Refreshments and light food will be served. Language and childcare services will be available. All secondary level multilingual learners have been invited centrally from FCPS via email.

If you are planning to attend, please use this Registration link. This event is open for students, families, or staff.

Popsicles on the Playground Monday and Tuesday Night!

We're looking forward to seeing everyone at our Popsicle on the Playground events this Monday and Tuesday evening on the Lane playground.

Kindergarten families will have their event at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, followed by 1st and 2nd grade families starting at 6:30.

On Tuesday we will welcome 3rd and 4th grade families at 5:30 and 5th and 6th grade families at 6:30.

At our Popsicles on the Playground events, you can meet other families in your grade level (new and returning), enjoy a cool sweet treat courtesy of the PTA, and get ready for the new school year ahead.

We could not hold these events without the support of our amazing Lane PTA! The group will be selling spiritwear and other items both nights, as well as signing families up for membership. If you might like to make a purchase, please be sure to bring cash or a credit/debit card. The PTA is also looking for volunteers to help. You can sign up here: https://signup.com/go/TrjCvcc.

PLEASE NOTE: If FCPS cancels outdoor activities due to excessive heat or the weather is bad (rain or thunderstorms), these events will be canceled.

We hope to see you there!
